We believe in a world where the primary value is the person—their feelings, dignity, and right to be heard. That is why we develop family-centered care and strive to transform the healthcare system so that the child and their family are always at its center.

Principles of Family-Centered Care

Dignity and Respect

  • The opinion and choice of the patient and family are clarified and respected.
  • The knowledge, values, upbringing, beliefs, cultural traditions, and other characteristics of the patient and family are incorporated into the planning and delivery of medical care.
  • Communication occurs with dignity and respect.

It is believed that dignity and respect are innate human qualities, and these are not taught in medical universities. However, in progressive countries, most questions on medical specialty exams are ethical in nature. Dignity and respect are placed first in the family-centered approach. This is where the first lectures in medical institutions should begin, and it should run as a common thread throughout the entire training of physicians.

Access to Information

  • Medical professionals, the patient, and the family communicate.
  • The patient and their family are provided with complete and unbiased information.
  • Medical professionals explain prescriptions.

Information dissemination, or information competence, is primarily the physician’s commitment to seek, recognize, and identify only truthful information, draw conclusions, and critically evaluate a large flow of information. It is also the physician’s ability to explain several treatment options to the patient and ensure that the patient and their family understand what is being explained to them.

Participation in the Treatment Process and Collaboration

  • Families collaborate with physicians: they should be encouraged to participate in the treatment process and in making decisions regarding the pediatric patient’s health.
  • The family has the opportunity to be in the room with the child during their hospital stay.
  • The family has the opportunity to be with the child during various procedures: examinations, injections, dressings, etc.
  • The family’s expectations regarding the child’s treatment outcomes are clarified, as well as whether the treatment process is understood.
  • The physician agrees on the prescription of medications after explaining all possible medication options, taking into account their cost-effectiveness and consequences of use.
